School Based Home Support Services (HSS)

What is S.T.E.P.S.?

STEPS is a Strategic Therapeutic and Educational Program for Students. The STEPS program provides school-based mental health services. 

STEPS is a state-approved program and is provided locally in the Thompson Falls Schools in collaboration with AWARE, Inc.  AWARE provides services with a team approach.  The family and child, principal, teachers, and guidance counselor are all key team members.

The goal of STEPS is to prevent the child from experiencing school failure by improving the child's behavior and performance.  Empowering parents in the education process and increase family feeling of affiliation with their school is important.  Children learn best if they can experience life and learning in a consistent environment.  Supporting the child in their home, their school and their community encourages normal growth and development. 

STEPS specifically provides these services with a dedicated team in each school, made up of a clinical counselor and a behavioral specialist.  Each team works with students in the form of individual and group therapy sessions, family therapy, and support, in-class assistance, and advocacy for students in the school setting.  Each team is committed to providing ethical, confidential, and professional services within the school to children and their families, in collaboration with school professionals.  Their services are available at all three Thompson Falls Schools, ensuring your child is able to receive services from kindergarten to graduation.

Home Support Services (HSS) is a Medicaid / CHIP covered service, they bill the family's insurance for services provided.  If your child is not Medicaid eligible or does not have Medicaid, payment is based on a sliding fee scale.
